Inside the app

Apple FM in VS Code showing a JavaScript refactor alternative and context controls
Apple FM · VS Code refactor previewPublic README

A real VS Code refactor preview from the project README. It shows the editor tool; the Terminal and Swift projects retain their own interfaces and distribution evidence.

The workflow problem

Model assistance needs to fit the tool where a developer is already working. It also needs clear boundaries: what context was used, whether the model is available, and what happens when a suggestion is accepted.

Three tools, separate jobs

VS Code

On-device inline completion and selection refactoring with reviewable alternatives and editor-anchored diagnostics.

Terminal

A zsh autocomplete plugin. Tab accepts a suggested suffix; Enter remains a separate execution step. Stale responses are rejected.

Swift

A shared library and JSON helper for Foundation Models, with typed availability and local generation for native apps and editor tools.

Engineering focus

  • Review before applying. Generated editor changes are presented as alternatives the developer can inspect.
  • Acceptance is separate from execution. Shell suggestions require explicit acceptance and do not run themselves.
  • Make model state visible. Availability checks and request diagnostics explain what the local model can do and what context it received.

Inspect the work

The three public repositories provide source, requirements, and release notes. They are separate Products in the Apple FM Product Family; a source release and an installable extension are different distribution milestones.

Availability & limits

Experimental tools and developer previews. These require a supported Mac and an available Apple Intelligence model. The VS Code helper is unsigned and not notarized. Swift is a source release that must be built locally. Operating-system and toolchain requirements vary by Product; check each README before installation. Current source can be ahead of published releases.

More work, same practical approach.
